I donā€™t usually read books by the season; I just I donā€™t usually read books by the season; I just pick up whatever Iā€™m feeling on a whim, but I had a plan this year to start rereading Little Women right on Thanksgiving because the book is all about gratitude. So far, itā€™s preachier than I remember, but itā€™s also so wholesome. The introduction of Laurie and his grandfather really picked up the pace. But before I started Little Women, I read a few novellas and light books after I finished Mary Anne by Daphne du Maurier because I didnā€™t want my timing to be thrown off by a bigger book. So, full reviews on the blog of: - Mary Anne (disappointing, too much political intrigue, du Maurier herself didnā€™t like it either) - Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (honestly so good, made me cry, Iā€™m falling in love with Steinbeckā€™s writing) - Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (this author is not for me, reads like fanfiction, the romance was so affected) - The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway (I still have no idea how Hemingway managed to make me care about an old man catching a fish. And I read The Secret History and Wuthering Heights, which are pretty much as spooky as I get in my reading material, and my current read is a Daphne du Maurier novel. I was a bit surprised by how much I liked it. Donna Tarttā€™s writing was exquisite and the plot compelling. I had the rare impulse to pick up nonfiction, so I I had the rare impulse to pick up nonfiction, so I read Redefining Anxiety by Dr. John Delony. Itā€™s a very quick read, as it was designed to be. I think it took me about 2 hours. Much more enjoyable way to consume Ancient Greek tales than reading heroic epics, a genre Iā€™ve never gotten behind. But itā€™s definitely a romance novel more than a Greek retelling, and the romance was too insta-lovey for me. šŸ“–šŸŖ¶full book review of Brave New World is up šŸ“–šŸŖ¶full book review of Brave New World is up on the blog The world Huxley creates in Brave New World is so vivid and incredibly introduced. He sets the scene up very well in the first chapter, and the rest of the novel flows smoothly after. Just like 1984 by George Orwell, there are aspects of the novel strikingly predictive of our modern world, with its genetic engineering, exaggerated version of hookup culture, the mass production (even though we thankfully havenā€™t turned to mass producing humans yet) and materialism, the turning to drugs for escaping our emotions, our willingness to let go of individuality and adopt the ā€œtrendingā€ worldview, etc. Early on, I decided not to tab the book, because almost every single page would have a tab from how much I was underlining, and my frugality couldnā€™t handle it. I canā€™t help but set it against 1984, arguably its sister dystopian classic. I think I found Brave New World more imaginative and the prose easier to read, but overall I found 1984 more powerful and definitely heavier. They were both prophetic in their own ways, and I think a blend of the two is probably more realistic of where society is going.
